Big is Beautiful – London to Welcome Plus Size #Fashion Weekend in 2013

We live in a world where we are led to believe that the male and female form should be sculpted in a certain way. Ordinarily fashion shows will comprise of models representing these “ideals” as vessels to exhibit designers’ works. It is rare to see plus size fashion given this sort of a platform, but Plus Size Fashion Weekend 2013 is about to quash this barrier to entry.

About?

The Official London Plus Size Fashion Weekend (LPSFW) will take place in the UK capital in February. Taking place from the 15th until the 16th of February 2013, the inaugural event has been designed to run in unison with the London Fashion Week. Organised by fashion boutique, Trapped in a Skinny World as well as plus size magazine, Evolve, the aim is to attract around 500 people to the event.

Where?

LPSFW is being split between two locations – Beach Blanket Babylon and Shoreditch Town Hall and will be exhibiting the work of plus size fashion designers in addition to welcoming speakers, models and retailers. The focus of the weekend will be centred on fashion for wearers of dress size 14 and above.

What to Expect?

Milk Management will be sending professional models onto the catwalk clad in the latest garments from America and Europe. Sponsoring the catwalk is clothing brand, Simply Be. Popular French fashion blogger, Gaelle Vanessa Prudencio will be hosting a “swap shop” over the weekend and other activities include a styling masterclass as well as a plus size market, which will be based on a discussion between a panel including Velvet D’Amour (the first plus size model to take to the runway in a Jean Paul Gautier show) as well as Jessica Kane, the chief executive of Skorch – an American plus size magazine.

Back Story

Remi Ray is the found of LPSFW and after graduating from the London College of Fashion she opened the boutique, Trapped in a Skinny World. Her desire to start the boutique and kick off the Plus Size Fashion Weekend was mainly due to her wanting to design clothes for people of a similar build to herself – as opposed the Vogue/FHM-type models. This was spurred on after visiting New York for their Full Figured Fashion Week, which is essentially where LPSFW draws inspiration.

With budding models flying in from all over Europe to audition it is clear that the demand for this type of occasion is there and that Remi is definitely onto a good thing.
