Keeping Fit And Healthy In Your Life After 25

Our health is very important and something we probably don’t think about much as long as we remain fit and well. We are reminded on an almost daily basis of ways to stay healthier or make our lives as healthy as they can be.

Five a day

Perhaps one of the most successful campaigns in recent years has been the ‘five a day’ one. This initiative encourages everyone to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. I say it’s one of the most successful not because we all do it but the slogan is well remembered.

Why should we eat five a day? Well first and foremost it’s usually fresh and unprocessed but the original reasons were to combat cancer and heart disease.

Drink lots of water*

Drinking water has become the mantra of many over the last decade or so. There are many good reasons for this. Water keeps you hydrated, detoxifies you, raises your immune system’s resistance to infection, helps digestion, relieves headaches, increases your energy, is good for your complexion, prevents cramp and helps you lose weight. Ah now we’ve got your attention! It isn’t a miracle diet drug but it does help to fill you up and reduce feelings of hunger. Did we mention it also makes you feel happy?

Drinking water can also help reduce the risk of colon, bladder and breast cancers and heart disease. Pour us another now.

For the obsessive amongst you beware of drinking too much water because that can also cause problems. Doctors now recommend about five – six glasses a day rather than the original eight.

Exercise your way to health

Regular exercise is a sure way to keep fit. If it’s new to you then don’t go full throttle at first, build up to it. Walk a little each day, take up cycling or take a class of yoga or pilates. Exercise is good for us in so many ways.

If you can get out in the fresh air this is also good and makes sure you get those vital Vitamin D top ups when the sun shines.

Get enough sleep

We all need different amounts of sleep but a good gauge is about seven hours a night minimum. But everyone is different and we need differing amounts of sleep at different periods in our lives. You know you’re getting enough when you can function normally and don’t want to fall asleep during the day.

Sleep is important for us to function at our best and it is when the body renews and revitalises itself. If you don’t get enough you will soon feel the effects. You might be grumpy or irritable and concentration or memory could suffer.

Protection

Despite all of these ways of keeping yourself healthy sometimes we find ourselves in need of health care. It’s at times like this when health insurance can be invaluable especially if you need to see a specialist of any kind. However check any policy you agree to carefully to make sure the things you might want covered but be prepared to pay more for additional benefits.
