50 Shades of Grey in Fashion

Recently, we presented you with 25 tips for maintaining a youthful appearance and emphasizing your best feature. But beauty isn’t just skin deep.

Style is equally–if not more–important. That’s why we’re providing you with 10 tips for updating your wardrobe. Read on and find on how to look fantastic in your late twenties and beyond.

1. Don’t be afraid to play with color.

Bright hues and rich colors aren’t just for teenagers. Just because you’re over twenty-five, you shouldn’t be resigned to black and neutrals. It’s okay to start small, too. Determine your “skin tone season” and figure out which colors look best on you. Then buy one or two versatile pieces in that color and experiment!

2. Less is More

When it comes to either building or updating a wardrobe, quality is key! Better to have one really nice pair of well-tailored slacks than three cheap, ill-fitting versions of the same thing.

3. But Sometimes More is More!

If you want to wear a hat, belt, and scarf.. by all means, go ahead! Throw out the fashion rule book. Wear what makes you feel happy and confident. The joy you exude will make you more attractive and approachable than any style guide could!

4. Invest in Good Shoes

Seriously. If only for the sake of your feet! You want to feel as good as you look. This is doubly important for heels! Chunky heels are really in right now, and can give your tootsies the support they need while keeping you stylish and on-trend.

5. But Speaking of Trends…

Keep it simple and honor your personal taste. Don’t be afraid to avoid unflattering trends. If you don’t feel confident in skinny jeans or crop tops, skip them and stick to pieces that highlight your assets. There’s something to be said for minimalist chic: the perfect pair of boot-cut jeans, a black cashmere sweater. Find out what you like and then PERFECT that look. (The same can be said for your makeup/beauty routine).

All that being said… trends can be fun! And fashion is supposed to be a joyful, creative experience. If you’re in a rut, it’s absolutely okay to think outside the box. Take some fashion risks. Make some faux pas. Live your life!

6. Scarves Are THE BEST!

There are so many different ways to tie scarves and there are so many versions of this awesome accessory: the infinity scarf, scarves as headbands, belts, and purse accents!

Check out the video below for different scarf-tying methods.

(Bonus: they’re also great for ladies who feel self conscious about the neck area.)

7. Get a Fun Mani/Pedi (Or Give Yourself One)

Sometimes style is in the details. Don’t neglect your hands, especially if you work from home. If you look down and see pretty purple nails hitting away at your laptop keys, you’re sure to have a brighter day. Remember that your beauty routine can be stylish, too!

8. Shop Thrift Stores

If you go to places like the Salvation Army or Goodwill, you’ll save money and help out a good cause. Plus, you’ll find unique pieces that nobody else will have. And since most of the items have been pre-washed, you don’t have to worry about shrinkage.

9. Accessorize

Remember when I said less is more? That isn’t always the case… especially when it comes to jewelry. If you love wearing lots of pieces in order to create a bohemian look, do it! If you prefer minimalist accents, do that! But regardless, let your jewelry make a statement. Etsy has some great, original pieces!

10. Create a Pinterest Board For Fashion Inspiration

This way, you can save all of your favorite looks in one place. Don’t be afraid to steal someone’s look. Add your own twist to make it original.
