Get Off the Naughty List: Six Bad Beauty Habits to Break in 2015

Are you on the naughty list? Not Santa’s naughty list, the beauty naughty list. We are all guilty of bad beauty habits now and again, but some offenses are more serious than others. If you’re looking to get out of a bad beauty rut this year, or want to make 2015 a fresh start for your look, you need to get off the naughty list and break those bad habits. The following are the biggest beauty no-nos to avoid if you plan on making it to the nice list and getting a fresh start for 2015.

Using Old Makeup

This one is a toughy—makeup is expensive these days, and some kinds of makeup stay good for longer than others. It can be hard to know how long is too long to be using your cosmetics, but a good rule of thumb is to replace most of your items every 4-6 months. Every time you use your makeup, germs accumulate inside and the product begins to break down, rendering it ineffective and possibly harmful. It is also crucial to keep your makeup brushes and sponges as clean as possible. Clean those brushes every few weeks to further eliminate any lingering germs.

Using Harsh Whitening Products

It seems like a new miracle teeth-whitening solution is released weekly promising to give us perfect, glittering smiles. While some whitening products are effective, some aren’t worth the price of damaging your teeth. A lot of these products contain ingredients that are damaging to the enamel on your teeth, and once enamel is damaged, it can’t be repaired. A dentist in Winnipeg at the Polo Park Dental Centre suggests that you consult with your dentist before trying any new whitening products. He or she can find the best product for your teeth specifically, especially if you have sensitive teeth. With an expert recommendation, you can be sure you aren’t using any products that could damage your pearly whites in the long run.

Sleeping In Your Makeup

We’ve all been there. You’ve had a long day, watched a late movie, or just got into bed and don’t want to wash your makeup off. As tough as it can be to get up and wash your makeup off, sleeping with it on is a huge beauty no-no. Oils, dust, and toxins from the day will accumulate on your skin, and if left unwashed, your pores will quickly clog up. On top of that, you have to worry about perspiration and dead skin cells accumulating on your face while you sleep. Many beauty products include harmful chemicals and can be absorbed into the skin if not cleared off at the end of the day. As you can see, it is worth the extra energy to go to bed with a clean face.

Worshipping the Sun (or Religiously visiting the Tanning Bed)

While we all want the look of a glowing sun goddess or beach babe, sun damage is no joke when it comes to the health of your skin. Recent research indicates that tanning booths significantly increase the risk for skin cancer. Whether you spend a lot of time outside, or you like to hit the tanning salon every week, try to cut back on sun exposure during 2015. There are plenty of self-tanning products that don’t look orange, and allow you to gradually get a tan. If you are outside a lot, don’t forget the SPF! Any exposure can be harmful to the skin if you aren’t careful, so plan ahead and enjoy beautiful skin for years to come.

Over-Processing your Hair

These days, it can be tough to resist using ten (or more) products in your hair daily. We have so many products available to make our hair look thicker, softer, lighter, curlier the list goes on and on. While a lot of these products can be beneficial to your hair game, using too many can be damaging. Many of these products will have chemicals and toxins that are actually harsh on your hair, and sometimes bad for the rest of your body. Try to switch to more natural products, and avoid too many chemical treatments or blowouts, which can seriously damage hair and lead to fallout over time.

Picking at Your Chipped Manicure

It’s the most nagging, obnoxious feeling you’ve chipped your manicure and just want to peel the whole thing off. While it can be extremely tempting to pick at your manicure once it starts to chip, this is a very bad habit to be in. When you pick off the nail polish (especially on gel nails) you are damaging the layers of your fingernails. Keep your nails safe and strong by using nail polish remover or acetone to clear the color off, and put your picking and peeling days to bed.

Do yourself a favor and start ditching your bad beauty habits in 2015. Sure, we all get lazy or even rebellious in our beauty routines, but you’ll feel better (and look better) once you kick the old crummy habits and step up your beauty game.
