Where Is the Best Area to Have Botox?

Botox injections are, now, the most popular and most successful type of cosmetic procedure in the world. It was initially developed as a medicine but has been popular in cosmetic treatment for several decades now. It has been shown to be effective and safe for a range of conditions, including hyperhidrosis, migraine prevention and the treatment of wrinkles.

There is a bit of confusion in terms of where on the face Botox can be used, because many people think it can address any wrinkle. In reality, however, there are different wrinkles and Botox cannot address them all.

Types of Wrinkles

  • Surprise lines, which are found on the forehead and appear as horizontal creases.
  • Number 11 lines, or frown lines, which are vertical and sit between the eyebrows.
  • Crow’s feet, which are found outside of the corner of an eye, fanning out towards the temples.
  • Smile lines, which go from the nostrils to the corner of the mouth.
  • Smoker’s lines, which are around the lips and are vertical. These appear because smokers have to pucker to draw on their cigarette.

What Does Botox Do?

Botox smooths wrinkles because it forces the underlying muscles to relax. It doesn’t actually affect the skin, therefore. Active facial muscles pull the skin and this is what causes wrinkles. Botox simply stops this movement. When this happens, the skin is no longer under constant stress and the wrinkles start to disappear. If the skin is elastic and well-hydrated, this will go quicker. Older people will have to wait slightly longer.

Botox relaxes the muscles, so it is best used in areas with a lot of muscle. However, it is important to not stop those muscles that lead to expression from relaxing. This would lead to the so-called ‘frozen face’.

Generally speaking, when people visit Botox Newport Beach clinics, it is because they want to get rid of frown lines, surprise lines and crow’s feet. Some use them on smoker’s lines, but this doesn’t work very well, particularly if the patient continues to smoke.

It is not possible to treat smile lines with Botox. This is because these lines tend to be visible even when the muscles don’t move. Blocking these muscles could lead to facial droop, which doesn’t actually get rid of the lines.

Off label, which means there is no FDA approval, Botox has been used to change jaw shape for people who have a square jaw. This is known as ‘Botox jaw line contouring’. It does not, however, tighten the skin on the jaw. Rather, it is suitable for people who genetically have strong muscles in their jaw area, which is often found in those of Asian descent. It is important to remember that this treatment remains off label at present.

Clearly, Botox is a fantastic discovery that has helped a lot of people to look the way they want to look. However, it also has its limitations and you have to be realistic about that. Speak to a clinician to find out what Botox could do for you first.
