5 Cosmetic Procedures That Are Safe and Satisfying

Medical advancements have made cosmetic surgeries some of the most commonly performed procedures in the United States. While no surgical procedure is considered 100 percent safe, there are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that are considered both safe and effective.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gels consisting of collagen and hyaluronic acid used to fill in lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring on the face. These gels are injected underneath the skin with a fine needle and immediately improve the appearance of facial imperfections. These fillers shouldn’t be confused with Botox. The filler fills depressed areas and restores facial volume in just one visit. You will need touch-up visits depending on the type and brand of filler your doctor uses, but you should only need to go in every six to twelve months.

Side effects are usually minor. You’ll likely have redness, swelling, or discomfort at the injection sites, but these go away within 24 to 48 hours. Rarely, some patients have allergic reactions to the gel. Immunocompromised patients may experience infections at the injection site, so this procedure isn’t advisable for people with immune system disorders.

CoolSculpting

Liposuction used to be the only way to cosmetically reduce/remove fat, but technology has made fat removal completely non-invasive. CoolSculpting uses a device to apply cold to areas of stubborn fat. The cold temperatures kill fat cells as they detach from the skin. The fat cells are then permanently and naturally absorbed by the body. There are virtually no side effects with this procedure. You might have redness from the cold, but most patients say the procedure feels like a massage and they return to work and exercise afterwards. CoolSculpting isn’t meant for weight loss; it’s strictly for eliminating stubborn pockets of fat that diet and exercise aren’t able to eliminate.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation uses implants to increase the volume of the breasts or improve symmetry. Risks depend on what is being used to augment the breasts (fat vs implants), but the biggest risks are anesthesia risks, pain, and infection. More rarely, some women experience changes in sensation on their nipples or breasts, implant leakage, or wrinkling of the skin over the implant. Since pain is the most common side effect, the breasts are wrapped in a compression garment to minimize swelling and pain post-op. Patients can go home after a few hours, but a cosmetic surgeon in Salt Lake or your particular area will put the patient on strict bed rest for the next three to five days.

Microdermabrasion

Chemical peels are still commonly used to minimize or eliminate certain facial imperfections, but microdermabrasion is significantly less harsh. Chemical peels use acid to peel away the top layers of skin until new, undamaged layers of skin are revealed. Overall, chemical peels take three weeks to finish (from the actual acid application to the end of the peeling stage), and many patients experience a lot of pain from the peel.

Microdermabrasion is much gentler and involves no chemicals. Fine crystals are “blasted” onto the face to remove dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion is used to reduce acne scarring, age spots, and superficial lines and wrinkles. Side effects are limited to redness, dryness, and some peeling if the skin isn’t properly moisturized.

Skin Tightening without Surgery

Ten years ago, you had to undergo an invasive and painful surgery if you wanted to tighten your skin. However, ultrasound technology has made non-invasive skin tightening possible. Ultherapy is a procedure that lifts the eyebrows, neck, and chin using ultrasound therapy. The ultrasound waves penetrate the skin to trigger collagen production. A lack of collagen causes sagging skin, and naturally stimulating collagen production eliminates the need for injections and incisions.

You may see immediate results, but most likely you won’t see maximum results for two months as collagen naturally forms and tightens the skin. There are virtually no side effects with Ultherapy. Your skin might be red for a few hours, but there is no discomfort. Some minor swelling is possible, as is tingling, but these aren’t bothersome and don’t require you to take any time off of work.

Cosmetic procedures have advanced so much that it isn’t necessary to go under the knife to improve your appearance. If you’re considering an invasive cosmetic surgery, it’s possible that your surgeon can recommend a non-surgical alternative.
