Gold
Most metals used in jewelry making are soft and therefore easily scratched. Make sure whichever solution you choose is nonabrasive. One sure bet is this DIY recipe.

  • Mix a solution of water with a few drops of dish soap. Using a cotton swab, rub the solution over the gold jewelry making sure to get into all the crevices. Rinse in lukewarm water and dry with a soft cloth.

Silver
Silver is no exception to the notion that most jewelry metals are easily scratched. That being said, it’s a good idea to avoid any DIY cleaner that uses highly acidic or abrasive ingredients. Try this simple cleaning solution for sparkling jewelry without the scratches.

  • Use a cotton swab and glass cleaner to remove any tarnish or dirt. The best method is to spray the cleaner directly onto the cotton swab and then gently scrub way to gunk. Rinse in lukewarm water and dry with a soft towel.

Diamond
When you invest in diamonds, many of the finer companies like Best Brilliance will send cleaning and care instructions with your jewelry. If your diamonds come with instructions you should always follow them. If not, try this cleaning method that will clean the stone without ruining the setting.

  • Using glass cleaner and a new soft bristled baby toothbrush, gently scrub the diamond releasing any dirt or buildup on the stone. The bristles from the toothbrush will effectively clean the stone in and around the setting without scratching the jewelry. Make sure to rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

Everything Else
Just about every other type of jewelry component (with the exception of pearls) can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft bristled baby toothbrush. Always rinse clean and dry with a non-abrasive cloth. When cleaning pearls, a soft dry cloth should do. Some things to avoid are:

•Boiling
Don’t boil your jewelry if the item contains pearls, and enameled element or glue (typically used on earrings).
•Submersion
Don’t submerge your jewelry in water if the peace contains pearls or the solution has acidic or abrasive elements.

Cleaning our jewelry is something we all say we do, but actually rarely do. This is a good thing, as over cleaning can cause damage. Follow these simple cleaning remedies about once a month for the jewelry you wear every day, and about every 3 to 6 months for the jewelry you wear occasionally, and your jewelry will shine like new.
