Must-Have Items for Your Home’s First Aid Kit

If you don’t have a first-aid kit already stored somewhere inside the house, you definitely should. Creating your own first-aid kit is not only important, but can be fun as well. You can start with the basic first-aid items and then add your own remedies and medications to complete the kit. Here are some of the must-have items to help you get started.

Adhesive Bandages and Other Basic Items

One of the most important items to have in your first-aid kit is adhesive bandage. This is the one item that can help solve a lot of problems in seconds. You can choose your own favourite brand, but make sure you keep enough adhesive bandages and that you have them in different sizes.

You can extend the kit by adding gauze pads and gauze rolls, along with some rolls of adhesive tape. Sterile gauze pads are handy for treating bigger wounds and covering the skin after treatment, such as after you apply an ointment.

An elastic bandage that is at least 3 inches wide is also among the must-have items in your kit. This can be used for wrapping the wrist, ankle or any other part of the body that’s injured.

To complete the basic kit, simply add some cotton balls and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. You can also choose to use alcohol swabs instead. Alcohol swabs come in small packages and can be used right away, making them more practical to use.

Ointments and Remedies

There are a lot of products to add to the home first-aid kits, each of them designed to treat different problems or wounds. Among the first to include in your own first-aid kit is a first aid ointment or a homeopathic solution. It usually comes in a small jar and can be applied to reduce pain, inflammation, speed up skin regeneration and treat different types of wounds. Products like the Emuaid cream are great for the purpose.

Of course, you can add other ointments to the kit too. Aloe Vera gel, for instance, is great for treating skin problems and relieving pain quickly. An anti-diarrhoea medication is another must-have item in your first-aid kit, along with antacids and antihistamine. You can even add additional items, including pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Over-the-Counter Meds

Some of the items we talked about earlier can treat general symptoms and illness, but you still need to have additional medications ready for more specific cases. A cough and cold medication is a good example. Paracetamol may be able to relieve the symptoms of a cold for a short period of time, but it is still necessary to take the right medications to cure the symptoms completely.

The same can be said for other personal medications you may have. Keeping enough in the first-aid kit will save you at such times when you run out or when you left your meds at the office. With a complete first-aid kit, you also don’t need to worry about providing proper treatments for the rest of the family should anything happen.
