5 Steps To Breast Health

Wherever you look, there are breasts. Billboards, advertisements, magazines, social media: breasts are a feature wherever you go. We are so exposed to the female form in all ways, that we are often desensitized to the importance of the health of our breasts. They are so often seen as a way to sell swimwear and market products, we can easily forget that breasts have an important function: feeding babies. We women are able to grow, give birth to and nourish babies, which means that our breast health is vital for our futures.

Attending regular appointments with your doctor when you have a full-time job and a full-time family can be difficult. It’s time that is often overlooked, which is bad enough in itself, but if you’re ignoring a problem with the health of your breasts you need to be making that appointment as soon as possible. When you have to wait for an appointment at the breast clinic, you need to take a proactive approach. If reading breast cancer stories doesn’t propel you to the doctor as soon as you can get there, then you should start being productive about your own breast awareness. You should be conducting regular breast exams at home to get familiar with your own body and what is real and right for you. In 20% of cases, breast cancer can be picked up by self-awareness during a breast exam rather than a mammogram. So, knowing that information, you should take your health into your own hands and follow the steps below for self-exams after a shower at home.

Know What To Look For. Before you can get started in examining your own breasts for changes, you need to know which changes you should be looking for. Stand in front of a mirror and look at your breasts. See their shape, colour and evenness and get to know what your breasts look like on any given day.

Check Every Day For A Month. You need to know what your breasts look like through ovulation, menstruation and on regular days when your hormones aren’t zipping all over your body. Note down changes that occur during those times of the month and you can get familiar with those.

Self-Exams. There are a lot of different ways you can do a self-check, from standing up to lying down. Most people like to do a self-exam whilst in the shower, as the soap being slippery can make it easier to feel all the contours of your breasts.

Know What To Feel For. The problem with self-exams is that sometimes you can feel like you’re looking for lumps in bags full of, well, lumps! Check out this comprehensive explanation of what you should be feeling for and what changes should make you spring to action.

Take Action. If there is a change in colour, evenness, shape and even size of your breasts, call your doctor. You will be taken seriously.

It is always better to be safe than sorry, so make your self-check a once a week affair and keep yourself healthy.
