Toothache? Here Are a Few Ways to Lessen the Pain

A toothache generally occurs when the nerve bundles leading into a tooth become damaged or infected. Some minor toothaches will eventually disappear on their own, and there are a few steps that you can take to lessen the pain and prevent further damage to your teeth and gums. Here are a handful of tips and tricks that will minimize your discomfort without the use of any prescription or over-the-counter painkillers.

Rinse Your Mouth with Saltwater

One of the most common causes of a toothache is an abscess between the gums and tooth. This issue generally takes place when a small piece of food gets lodged in the soft tissue, and that debris can cause inflammation and discomfort. Rinsing your mouth out with table salt and warm water should help with the swelling and discomfort. You might also be able to dislodge the debris entirely with a toothpick or floss.

Apply Clove Oil

Cloves and clove products make excellent painkillers, and they are a great option for aches and pains inside your mouth. Whole cloves contain a safe and natural painkiller known as eugenol. Instead of trying to rinse your mouth out with clove oil, you should apply a few drops to a cotton swab and then wipe the afflicted tooth for a minute or two. Powdered clove is another option, but processing whole cloves typically removes most of the eugenol.

Use a Peppermint Tea Bag

Organic peppermint is another natural painkiller that has been used by countless cultures for thousands of years. One of the best ways to quickly take care of a toothache is to gently bite down on a peppermint tea bag that has been soaked in warm water for a few minutes. You can also drink the peppermint tea directly or use it as a mouthwash. Unfortunately, tea bags only temporarily relieve pain, and the discomfort is going to return shortly after taking the tea bag out of your mouth.

Visit Your Dentist

Some of these home remedies will provide you with relief, but you should never ignore ongoing or severe pain. If the discomfort doesn’t fade away after a few hours, then you need to contact a dentist to schedule an emergency appointment. The pain might be caused by severe damage that must be addressed immediately. When left untreated, a toothache can bring your life to a grinding halt and make everyday activities practically unbearable. These few tips should help you minimize the pain until you are able to address the root cause of your toothache.
