Do You Feel Your Career Has Stalled?
When you are just entering the workforce, you feel you have your whole professional life ahead of you. However, many people enter the workforce just to get a job. Unless you’re lucky, it’s unlikely that you will find a position in your desired industry straight out of university.
At the time, you probably think that this job will do for now, but it’s not what you can envision yourself still doing in five years. Despite this, life happens much quicker than you expect it to, and suddenly, you find that you’re nearly 109 years into a job you only planned on staying in for two years at the most. From here, you may feel your career has stalled. So how do you get back into gear?
Go Back to School
One of the reasons you don’t feel you are progressing is because your skillset is outdated. Technology, operations, and more are constantly evolving when it comes to business, so you’ve got to take it upon yourself to keep up with these new changes to your industry.
Going back to school will allow you to do this. However, you can also use this opportunity to study something you never got the chance to beforehand. By doing this, you can enhance your skillset and look for a job in a different industry, perhaps one that you’ve always wanted to work in.
Be Your Own Boss
A lot of people are attracted to the prospect of being your own boss and moving into business ownership. However, if you’re not real business management experience, you can find it hard to know what to do.
Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities to get you comfortable with running your own business. One of these is franchise opportunities, which comes with the security you need to get the experience necessary. From restaurant options to a pet grooming franchise, there is plenty of potentials to look for, and you can search for something that aligns closely with the business industry you want to get into.
Start a Side Hustle
Ditching your current job for a brand new business isn’t suitable for everybody, though, and if you want to ensure you still have some financial security, a side hustle is the best way to do this.
You can use this hustle to sell your skills, whether artistic, such as a home bakery or graphic design, to something that any business could use, including web design or cybersecurity applications. Through this hustle, you can give yourself something else to work for, and you can decide whether you want to take it on full-time or keep it on the side to give yourself some extra income.
Ask For More Responsibility
You may not be in the position to start a side hustle or ditch your job for greener pastures. It’s even likely that you don’t want to move jobs, but instead want to see what else you can achieve in your current position.
If you meet with your immediate superior, there is the option to discuss getting more responsibility. This responsibility will vary between industries and experience levels, but it could range from heading a team of your own to working on important projects for new clients. Whatever the responsibility is, you want to make sure you impress, so give it you all and prove to everyone they should have given you such responsibility much earlier, and you shouldn; ‘t have had to ask for it, either.
There Is No Opportunity For Promotion
It might be that there is no opportunity for a promotion. This is especially true of industries where someone becomes the Executive of any diffusion and is expected to stay there for a long time. If you’re hoping to move up in your career, such situations will make it near impossible for you to take on the senior role you have always envisioned.
Near impossible, yes, but not entirely impossible. If you’re looking for a better position, there is the option to move down to a smaller firm but one where you can have a more senior role. This will allow you to climb the ladder even if your new firm is not as large or as established as your previous one. However, it gives you the chance to prove you are ready for more prominent roles, should you ever feel the need to move on again.
Getting Back Into Gear
Getting back into gear in your career can be a tricky thing; however, if you know what you want from your job, making the right changes to achieve your goals is always possible.
