Jackets

If you only invest in one piece this fall, make it a black wool coat with leather trim. This combo is everywhere in Europe and it’s easy to make a statement by throwing it on over any basics. If you want to take it up a notch consider going with an extra-long version that reaches below the knee. If nothing else, this should be your investment piece for the season. A coat that’s extra-long needs to be tailored and constructed perfectly to look sharp. Check out Ermenegildo Zenga’s expert touch with this length.

Hats

Plaid for fall may be as original as pastels for spring, but there’s no denying the timeless pattern was everywhere at Fashion Week. If a full plaid suit is a little more of a fashion risk (or investment) than you’re up for, a plaid hat is a great way to incorporate the trend. Stetson’s plaid ivy cap is a classic style that looks equally good with a sharp trench as it does with ripped jeans. Bonus: a thick wool blend cap actually keeps your noggin just as warm as a beanie.

Gloves

Never underestimate what a pair of buttery leather gloves can do to finish an outfit and make you feel like a million bucks. Of course black and brown go with everything, but consider getting on board with Paul Smith’s love affair with mustard. The bright but sophisticated hue makes a grey day a little cheerier.

Layers

Chambray shirts have proven themselves to be a wardrobe staple season after season, so hang onto yours for an upgraded weekend look. Also consider mixing in a dark turtleneck. Esquire says, “Turtlenecks edge the line between casual and dressy, i.e., exactly where designers like Gucci’s Frida Giannini think a man should be right now, and when you go with a darker, thinner iteration, it slims the torso and frames the jaw.”

Pants

Don’t be afraid to show a little leg this fall. Combine cuffed pants, oxford shoes, and patterned socks for a triple threat that will carry you through the season. Details, The Sartorialist, and many other photographers have spotted ankle-bearing styles in anything from denim to velvet on the streets of Florence, Milan and Paris during Fall Fashion week.

Shoes

Shoes are an excellent opportunity to work some burgundy leather into your wardrobe. Look for brogue detailing and above-the-ankle oxfords this fall. Check out Alexander McQueen’s wingtips for a combination of all these elements. Distressed leather boots are here to stay for another season…or 40 seasons, depending on the level of distress you like.

Final thoughts on fall: camouflage is the print of the season. Nick Wooster wore it in a structured vest and jacket set while Glenn O’Brien uses his camo bag from MZ Wallace for random DJ appearances. Top any of these looks off with accessory trends including a giant statement scarf or structured backpack. Finally, remember that no matter how of-the-moment a piece is, it looks sloppy if it doesn’t fit. To really take your look to the next level this fall, find the best tailor you can afford and make him your friend.
