Don’t Get Stuck in a Beauty Rut! How to Avoid Looking Drab this Winter

The winter months can seem long and depressing, which can lead to not only feeling dull, but falling out of your normal beauty routine and looking drab as well. In the spring and summer, we are all about fun makeup, flirty fashion, and trying new hairstyles. But as soon as the temperature drops, many of us seem to revert to sweats, messy hair, and little effort when it comes to makeup. Don’t spend your winter hibernating—find a winter look that is all your own and stay looking fresh, even when the weather is dull. Here are some helpful hints to keep you looking refreshed and revitalized during the cold months ahead:

Skin

In the winter, we are often stuck indoors in dry, heated air. This dry air can make our skin dry out as well. Staying well hydrated is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer months, so the first thing is to drink plenty of water. Secondly, exfoliate! The harsh dry air of indoor heat can make the outer layers of our skin dry, dull and lifeless. The better exfoliated and moisturized your skin is, the better you will look and feel.

Lips

Our lips tend to dry out faster in the winter, also, just as our skin does. During the winter months, keep a good supply of lip balms or moisturizing lipsticks on hand at all times. Stick one in your coat pocket, your purse or backpack so you always have one handy. Going outdoors when the weather is bad and then back inside where the air is dry can do a real number on your poor lips. Don’t neglect them!

Teeth

A great way to give yourself a boost in the winter is to whiten and brighten your smile. We often get off our whitening routine in the winter, which can lead to yellowing and a dull smile. Whitening your teeth will make you want to smile more often, and there is nothing drab about that! With whiter teeth, the deeper fall and winter lip colors will really make your smile pop. According to Dr. Bruce Hartley, a dentist in SW Calgary, you can get a brighter smile by using special whitening toothpaste along with some whitening mouthwash. By sticking to a regular routine with these products, you’ll avoid any yellowing, and keep your smile looking fresh.

Hair

Winter weather will do a number on a hair style in no time flat. Icy rain or snow will ruin a carefully curled or straightened hair-do, and we all know that static is an issue when the temperatures drop and we are bundled up in parkas. This what can be done? Try finding styles for your hair that won’t suffer as much if you have to go out into winter weather, such as a cute messy bun or pulled straight back away from your face. You might be tempted to use extra heat when blow drying in the winter, but remember that this will lead to damage for your strands. Just remember, the beauty of winter is that you can throw on a chic beanie and skip the damaging styling tools for a day.

Wardrobe

If you live in a particularly cold climate, it can be tough to bundle up without looking frumpy. Just remember that you don’t have to sacrifice your warmth to look cute. Spice up your winter wardrobe with a new pair of boots and some colorful scarves. Scarves are so in right now, especially the adorable infinity scarves and hand-knit scarves. Choose bright colors that will help you feel more cheery and less drab in the winter, and you’re sure to look fashion-friendly as opposed to super frumpy.

Although we might slack on our regular beauty routine during the winter, that doesn’t mean we can give up all hope until the spring. Be sure to keep your hair, skin, and lips hydrated for a fresh look all winter long. Get creative with fun winter outfits, and be sure you have a bright smile that will light up your whole face. Winter means colder weather, bundling up, and less motivation to get ready, but it also means dramatic lip color, adorable hats, and sparkly makeup experiments. Embrace the winter season by taking a few extra measures to keep yourself looking fresh—don’t get stuck in a beauty rut!
