6 Tips for a Child-Friendly Wedding Reception

If there will be a lot of families with young children attending your wedding, how can you make sure that your wedding is as child friendly as possible? Some people choose to have child-free weddings, but this means that you are missing out on the joyous energy that little ones can bring to the event. Keeping the young guests of the wedding happy and occupied is important, as it will keep them out of trouble and make them (and their parents) a lot happier. Here are some ideas for keeping the kids busy so that the adults can relax and have fun:

Hire a Professional Children’s Entertainer

Consider having someone at your wedding that provides entertainment for the kids, such as a face painter, a clown or a mime. The little ones will be captivated by their silly antics and it will add to the overall atmosphere of the party. Take a look around for local entertainers and find someone who would bring the right brand of entertainment to your party.

Set Up Some Games

Little ones have a lot of energy, so set up some games so that they can play while the adults drink, chat and dance. If your wedding takes place at one of the larger wedding venues in Cheshire, you could set up a ping pong table, air hockey, Twister or a basketball hoop. If the kids spend the evening playing active games, they will tire themselves out and will have no energy left to cause any trouble.

Offer Arts and Crafts at the Tables

When it comes to your wedding meal, offer packs of crayons and sheets of paper at the tables so that little ones can draw pictures and colour while they are waiting for their meal. This will keep them occupied and the drawings will make for a lovely souvenir especially if they are a gift for the bride and groom.

Another great idea is to get a large roll of white butcher paper and spread it out on a table or even on the floor. Give out crayons and let the kids cover the large mural with drawings. At the end of the night you will have a huge collaborative art piece reflecting the creativity of all the little ones.

Consider a Babysitting Service

There are babysitting services available that will help to look after children during your wedding, usually in a separate area near the wedding reception. This will keep the kids happy and will allow their parents to relax and chat without having to supervise their little ones.

What About a Children’s Menu?

When it comes to the food at your wedding reception, you might want to consider offering a children’s menu with simple fare such as chicken fingers, spaghetti and mashed potatoes. Many hotels in Cheshire would be happy to accommodate this request. The little kids will not be interested in your fancy wedding food such as roasted duck with seasonal vegetables and the extra expense will be wasted on them as they will more likely want something simpler that they know and will enjoy. Don’t forget desserts for them too. This is a great way to save money and to make sure that the kids at your wedding will actually eat what they are served.

Set Up a Nap Room

Young children will most likely fall asleep before the wedding is over, but if you set up a napping room then their parents will not have to go home at bed time. It can be a secure monitored quiet room somewhere in the hotel where your wedding is being hosted with some beds or couches where the little ones can sleep. It could even be the same room where the children were babysat earlier in the evening and a babysitter could supervise them as they sleep. Being able to bring child but also having the ability to stay late is wonderful for any parents who are attending your wedding.

These are just a few of the ways that you can make your wedding as child friendly as possible. Of course, the most important thing is to be patient. Your attitude towards having children at your big day is what will make their parents feel welcome at your event. Remember that they are only little and even if they are well behaved, they might still run around or have a meltdown when they are tired. Make sure that you are patient and accepting and embrace the wonderful happy energy that children will bring to your wedding!
