Healing Your Skin from Within

What do avocado, ginger root, hot tea and salmon have in common? They give you a hell of a good skin, that’s what. No, you don’t have to blend them in a weird concoction and rub them all over your body (yuck!). You just need to eat or drink them as usual. Of course, if usual translates to once per year, then you need to eat them in a very unusual way — more often!

Avocado Glow

This irresistible fruit is not only delicious, decadent and filling, but it also helps with dry skin. The healthy fats and oils it contains do wonders for the condition of your skin if you’re experiencing dryness. We all know that, in the long run, people with greasier skin actually get less wrinkles and look better when they’re old, so make sure you include not only avocado, but other healthy fat sources in your diet.

How to: Easy. Incorporate avocado in your weekly diet. The best way to do so is to eat it raw, mashed in yummy guacamole, sliced inside a salad or stuffed in sushi rolls.

Tea Rush

Not all tea is created equal, so hands off that black tea! If you want to improve the condition of your skin, there are many plants that are out there, just waiting to be discovered. Dry skin benefits from a rose and marigold infusion, while burdock root has been used for centuries to treat skin eruptions, acne, rosacea and eczema. Echinacea is useful against those nasty breakouts and sores, while Gotu Kola helps reduce scarring and heels keloids.

How to: To make a good infusion, you’ll probably have to use a teapot that has a strainer (or just strain it yourself after the tea is done). Strain balls are also fun and you can find them in many shops. Omega-3 Smoothness

Salmon, flax seeds and walnuts are packed with this healthy fat that’s taken the diet world by storm during the last few years. What makes this a good addition to your skin improving diet is the fact that Omega-3 reduces inflammation in the body, which is one of the main culprits, alongside sun exposure, behind premature aging and dryness.

How to: Natural is best. Burning or frying the fish will turn the healthy fats into a nightmare, and roasting the seeds and nuts makes them useless, so find alternatives to these methods. Gently poach the fish or oven bake it at a low temperature. You can even eat it raw, if it’s sushi grade, as sashimi. Spread the nuts and seeds in a green salad or use them to make your own bread, in the oven.

Ginger Shine

For centuries, ginger has been used for its health benefits. It’s good if you have a cold or the flu, it soothes pain and menstrual cramps and it’s a good relief for indigestion. But ginger isn’t only good on the inside. Drinking it makes your skin healthier because it prevents inflammation, it clears the skin and it’s high in antioxidants, which help your skin fight against aging.

How to: Simply replace your diet coke with a ginger-lemon infusion. Drink it as often as you like, as it is, without any sugar or artificial sweetener. In the winter, have it hot, as a great remedy for other cold-related problems, while in summer you can turn it into a great homemade ice tea.

Sour, but good

You’ve probably heard of probiotics before — they’re healthy bacteria found in yogurt that help your digestion. But that’s not all! It turns out probiotics are also found in many other food sources and they work wonders for your skin. Just like including Vitamin K2, Niacin and Silica in your diet can make your skin glow again, probiotics can have a positive influence on your skin.

How to: Grab that sauerkraut from the local German store and never look back. If you don’t have a local German shop, try some pickles or kimchi, the Korean speciality dubbed the healthiest food in the world. If you like miso soup, never fail to order it when you’re going out.
