Just Graduated? 5 Ways to Get Your Name (And Resume) Out There Fast
  • Save

Graduating with a shiny, new degree is one of the most satisfying feelings. It represents your academic achievements in a physical way.

The problem is that graduating isn’t enough to land you a comfortable job. Statistics show that recent graduates of college have a 7.2 percent unemployment rate and a 14.9 percent underemployment rate.

This means many college graduates fail to acquire jobs, and many more fail to acquire jobs that pay a fair amount for their skills.

Let’s explore five ways that you can overcome this employment challenge. We’ll look at ways you can get noticed, and acquire similar attention for your resume.

1. Broaden Your Search Horizons

The biggest mistake new graduates make pertains to the way they search for jobs. They may have moved to a particular town for school, and they may choose to keep their job search limited to that town.

The problem is that other graduates will do this, which in turn diminishes the supply of jobs for a particular field.

Search around the country and internationally for your job. This will greatly increase your chances of landing your dream job or something close to it.

2. Network with Real People

Countless graduates are seeking to be noticed at the same jobs that you do so. To stand out, you need to form personal connections.

Use the relationships you already have to branch out. Meet the friends of your relatives. Chances are that they know someone who could be considered a major influence in a field that is related to your dream job.

3. Use a Customized Resume

A resume is what employers use to determine if you are worthy of an interview. Some employers may get thousands of resumes, all of which look incredibly similar due to the use of default resume formats.

Customize your resume. Make it something that states why you would be an advantage to your prospective employer. You want to sell yourself without boring a human resource manager with all the boring details of your life.

4. Emphasize Your Education

Most graduates recognize that there is a difference between a degree from a community college and one from a prestigious university.

What you may fail to realize is that there are differences between college programs. A master of public administration degree from an institution like Norwich University, for instance, can give you experience that you can use on your job.

If you have completed a program and have real life experience, let your potential employers know. This will make you stand out.

5. Attend Events

Job fairs, staffing agencies and charity events all have one thing in common—they are situations where you can meet other individuals.

If you attend these events and socialize, you can be noticed by potential employers. You can talk to them about job opportunities, which in turn can help you find the ideal job while having that edge over the competition.

Don’t Get Discouraged

Job searches can easily turn into prolonged events, but the idea is to continually get your name out there. The more exposure you have as a person, then the more likely it is that a potential employer will see how you could be an asset to their company.

Increase your exposure while marketing your unique skills. This will enable you to find the ideal job as soon as possible.
