Now that you own your home, you are responsible for repairs, which means you need tools. This includes everything from a screwdriver and hammer, which you might already have, to a stud finder, drill, and level for hanging pictures. Don’t forget smaller items like a tape measure, utility knife, and pliers.

There are some tools that every homeowner needs, while others depend on your skill level and the DIY projects you plan to tackle. Although you could purchase a pre-assembled tool kit at the hardware store, it may be cheaper to buy items individually — especially if you already have a decent collection.

Energy Star Appliances

If you need to buy any appliances for your new home, it’s worth spending a little extra for Energy Star models. Because these appliances use less energy and water than their counterparts, they will save you money on your utility bills.

While you’re at it, ask about the age of any appliances that came with the house. In general, older appliances are less efficient, and some may even be near the end of their lifespan. While it may not be necessary to replace every appliance right away, you should at least have a plan for doing so. Appliances aren’t cheap, so start researching and setting money aside. You could also invest in a home warranty from Total Protect to help pay for any repairs or replacements you need to make.

Better Insurance

Homeowners insurance is another area where you shouldn’t skimp. Many new homeowners make mistakes like only insuring a home for the amount of the mortgage rather than what it would cost to rebuild the home. You may also want pay extra for extended replacement coverage or guaranteed replacement coverage.

No matter what insurance you choose, make sure you know exactly what it covers — and what it doesn’t. Know whether your policy includes flood insurance and whether you need that. Find out what your deductible is, and ask if it’s a flat rate or whether it varies depending on the cause of the damage. When it comes to home insurance, what you don’t know can most certainly hurt you.

Security System

A security system can seem like an unnecessary expense, but the mantra “better safe than sorry” definitely applies. Even safe neighborhoods and vigilant homeowners can become victims of theft, kidnapping, and other crimes. A good security system can monitor not only entrances, but also motion in the home, carbon monoxide levels, and smoke. Once an alarm has been triggered, the system will automatically notify the authorities, ensuring that help comes even if you are incapacitated.

Granted, these aren’t the most exciting ways to spend your money — but your future self will thank you for taking things seriously. With benefits that range from lower utility bills to better peace of mind, each one is well worth the expense.
