Thieves often look for people who seem out of place. If they can recognize you as a tourist, then they’ll think that you don’t have a good command of the local language and terrain. As long as they can nab your bag, they’ll be able to disappear down alleys or into buildings.

Before you travel to another country, learn about how the people there dress. Dressing like the locals will help you blend in with them.

Some countries also have strict rules about what people can and cannot wear in public. If you don’t follow the law, you could face severe punishments, including fines, jail time, or worse.

Don’t Drink too Much

A lot of people like to enjoy local beers, wines, and spirits while they travel. If you decide to drink alcohol, make sure you don’t consume too much. Thieves often target intoxicated travelers. Once you dull your senses, you’re much easier to steal from. You may not even notice that someone has taken your purse or wallet until it’s time to pay the bill.

It’s best to have no more than one drink per hour. You should also drink a glass of water between alcoholic beverages. It will help prevent you from getting drunk and having a hangover the next morning.

Have an Exit Plan

You never know when violence or natural disasters will turn an otherwise wonderful country into a dangerous place. Make sure you have an exit plan so you can leave as soon as something starts to go wrong.

It’s a good idea for you to carry the contact information for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. You should also get a MedjetHorizon membership. MedjetHorizon’s medical transport, travel security, and crisis response services will give you the assistance you need as quickly as possible.

Make Copies of Important Travel Documents

If someone manages to steal your backpack, purse, or luggage, you might lose important documents such as your passport or other forms of ID. Make copies of your important documents and keep them in several places. You can even distribute copies to other people in your group. As long as you have three or more copies stashed in your wallet, clothing, and bags, it’s unlikely that a thief will steal all of them.

Moreover, having a paper copy of your passport will make it much easier for you to get a new official version from your consulate or embassy. Without a copy, you might have a hard time convincing the local consulate that you’re an American citizen.

Traveling the world can introduce you to new customs and foods that will enrich your life. It’s important to stay safe when you visit other countries, though. If you don’t protect yourself, your dream vacation could turn into a nightmare.
