According to the World Health Organisation, cancer is one of the world’s largest killers, in 2015 it was responsible for 8.8 million deaths across the world. On a global scale, nearly one in six deaths is attributed to cancer. While treatments for cancer are improving all the time, and more and more people are able to beat cancer because of them, that doesn’t change the fact that in their lifetime, 38.5 percent of people will develop cancer.


Of course, while there are no proven ways to prevent cancer completely, there are steps that you can take to lower your cancer risk. According to Cancer Research, four in ten cases of cancer are preventable with lifestyle changes. Although websites like are showcasing positive studies regarding effectively treating more kinds of cancer, that doesn’t mean that we should stop making prevention a priority because that is not the case – prevention is always better than cure.


With that in mind, below is a list of ways that you can reduce your cancer risk, to make it less likely that you will go on to develop this awful disease.

One of the major factors that contribute to cancer risk is the food that we eat. Stories about certain food groups, such as processed foods, causing cancer are often reported in the media. However, currently, there is no hard evidence that any food group causes cancer, however, there is a clear link between processed foods and people who eat them in large quantities, and cancer. By eating a healthy, balanced diet, you can help to lower your cancer risk. Lots of fruits and vegetables, plenty of starchy foods like bread, rice and pasta, and a selection of meat, fish and eggs, is important for your health. By following a healthy, balanced diet, you can ensure that your body is getting all of the nutrients that it needs.


Stay a healthy weight

In developed countries, 60 percent of the population is overweight or obese on average. Being overweight has been linked to cancer in many different studies, which is why staying a healthy weight is so important. By ensuring that you are a healthy weight, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing many cancers, including bowel, breast, kidney, pancreatic, and womb cancer.


Be more active

Various studies have shown that people who are physically active on a regular basis are much less likely to go on to develop cancer. It is not known how physical activity makes developing cancer less likely, but it is clear that it does. One link is the fact that physical activity helps to keep the hormones healthy, which could be linked to cancer in one way or another. So if you aren’t doing the recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week, now is the time to start doing so.


These are just a few ways that you can lower your cancer risk; there are various other ones that you can also try, such as lowering your alcohol intake and quitting smoking if you smoke. The fact is that there is no way to prevent cancer altogether, all you can do is take steps to attempt to lower your risk.
