If you’ve been sitting at your job for some time contemplating what other options are out there, now is the time to start finding out where you can start a new career at this phase in your life. If you’re ready to hit that restart button, then here are some college programs that will give you the skills you need to get you your next new job.
Statistics
A degree in statistics can take you very far in the workplace. When most people think of statistics, they think strictly of math and teaching, but there’s much more to statistics then those two options. Getting a degree in statistics will help you work in government, at research institutions, and also at colleges and schools to help them plan their endowment programs.
Respiratory Therapy
Medical careers are in high demand. Therapists of all types are needed across the board to help people live healthier lives and alleviate the symptoms of their chronic illnesses. One of the areas that you could go into is respiratory therapy. Potential careers for people who study respiratory therapy include respiratory therapists, sleep center technologists, polysomnographic technologist, and pulmonary function technician.
Certified Nurse’s Aide
Another medical option, certified nurse’s aides are able to do much of the same work that nurses can, but they don’t have to be in school as long. This degree is great if you want to have a diverse range of options in the field of medical assisting when you graduate. You can complete your CNA degree in as little as two years and, if you network correctly and take an internship, you can be working in the field as soon as you graduate.
Dental Hygienist
If you’re looking for a job that is rewarding and helps people, then being a dental hygienist may be exactly what you need for a restart in your career. The great thing about this type of work is that you can open up an independent office or you can work at an already established dental office after graduation. Certification generally takes around two years and can be accomplished with an associate’s degree.
Paralegal
Paralegals and legal aids have a deep understanding of the law, just like the attorneys that they work for. If you’re using this career as a restart, you won’t have to spend years studying for the bar exam, but you can have a job that’s just as rewarding. In order to be able to effectively assist attorneys, you’ll need to study in a program that is focused specifically on paralegal work and the nuances that assisting an attorney brings to an office. You will learn a lot about the law, so if you’re not ready to keep up with changes in the law as they occur, then this may not be the career for you.
Teaching
While you can substitute teach without a degree in most states, in order to teach as a full-fledged teacher that can get full benefits and be part of teachers’ unions, you need to have your degree or a teaching certificate. The great thing about teaching is that you can choose the level at which you educate young minds. The diversity that a teaching degree or certificate offers allows you to go into many different geographical locations and be able to teach effectively no matter where you end up.
There are certain types of degrees that you get depending on the age range of kids that you want to teach – a degree in elementary education is a good example of this. Keep this in mind if you feel that your educational style will be best utilized in a classroom with kids of a certain age. If you want to focus on teaching preschoolers and kindergartners, then your degree will have a certain focus that it would not include if you’re going to teach high school students.
