Emergency Prep: 3 Essentials to Have In Your Home for Tough Times

We’re living in strange times where the average person faces all sorts of threats outside of their own control. The world is changing and we’re having to adapt to living with it. For the past couple of years, the world population has faced a global pandemic that has taken the lives of many, caused the vast majority to change their lifestyles and even face extended periods of lockdown and more. We’re also facing climate change, which is causing changes in climate, temperature and other integral factors of our day to day life. Then there are other challenges depending on where you live. Of course, it’s always good to be prepared, so what can you do to prepare yourself as best possible for tough times? Here are a few suggestions that should help you at some point or another.
Have Supplies
When we face food shortages, or when people stockpile all at once, there are scenarios where it can be difficult to get some of the basics that you might need on a day to day basis – toilet paper, pasta, rice and more. It’s a good idea to slowly build up supplies of stocks that you can fall back on during difficult times. Of course, items like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hygiene supplies should be fine to stand the test of time. When it comes to food, you should consider foods that have a long life on them. Dried foods like pasta and rice are good. Jarred foods can have a long life – sauces, pickles and more. Then there are tinned foods and frozen foods that tend to have the longest life.
Have a Water Supply
We often take our easy supply of water for granted. We simply turn the tap on and water comes out. But for many people in the world, things aren’t so easy. Think of places where water supplies become limited or where water can become contaminated or cloudy. Having your own, independent water supply can ensure that you always have enough clean water to provide for yourself and anyone else you live with. Invest in a large water tank that will keep you going.
Candles and Torches
Luckily, the majority of us don’t experience all too many power shortages. But in cases of power cuts or blackouts, it’s important that you’re able to see when the lights cut out. This is where having a good supply of candles and torches can come in useful. They’ll help you to get around and see what you’re doing until your usual power supply returns. If you opt for candles, make sure to always keep an eye on them, as they can be a fire hazard. You should also make sure you have matches or lighters to be able to actually light them.
These are just a few suggestions, but each can come in extremely useful when you actually need them. Hopefully, they’ll serve as a good springboard to ensuring you have everything you need during harder times.
