10 Props of Importance

  1. The parents. Naturally, this isn’t a prop you can take out of a closet, but it is often vital for the baby that their parents are very close by, if not actually in the picture itself.
  2. Hats. Nothing is cuter than a baby in a hat. Most newborn photographers will have hats specifically to fit newborns, but also oversized ones, which look absolutely amazing. Naturally, they all have baby-safe materials, do not present a choking hazard and are cleaned after every shoot.
  3. A cocoon. They are usually cloth pieces in which the baby’s body can curl up and they look absolutely adorable. Anne Geddes, one of the world’s most famous baby photographers, has frequently used these.
  4. Fabric. Pieces of fabric can create amazing backdrops for baby photography. Again, it is vital that there is no choking hazard associated with the fabrics.
  5. Antique produce scales. This allows photographers to create fake aged photographs. Lying a newborn baby on an antique produce scale is an instant winner for most parents.
  6. Antique furniture. As with the above, antique furniture can create beautiful backdrops for baby pictures, particularly if they are then turned sepia as well.
  7. Large plush pillows. These are important for the child’s comfort, but they are also important for the overall look of the picture itself. Babies often look as if they are comfortably sinking into a cloud when placed on large plush pillows. In fact, a white, fluffy plush pillow can be used to make it look as if the baby is actually on a cloud, particularly against a sky background.
  8. Trunks. These are also incredibly popular for photographs with small children. They can sit in the trunks or in front of them, depending on their age. These also look perfect in sepia.
  9. Bowls. Various materials can be used for this and they can be used for the baby to actually sit in, or to be placed around the baby.
  10. Baskets. Finally, a good newborn photographer will have a range of baskets available. It is particularly important here that these baskets are properly maintained and do not have any parts sticking out that the baby could hurt themselves on.
