The holidays may be the most wonderful time of the year, but they also can be the most stressful. I love the holidays because people are in the giving spirit and more family oriented. With that said, a lot of the stress comes from overspending. For some reason, the holidays have shifted from being generous to people thinking that buying gifts is the only way to show love. To get ahead of holiday stress we have a few tips to share to help you “Step onUp and Rethink Your Holiday Generosity“!
Step 1: Take inventory of what your loved ones want/need.
Although the holidays have become commercialized, to an extent, I still love giving gifts. I don’t think here is anything wrong with the gift giving tradition but you just have to take inventory first. If you know your kids won’t play with it or need it over the year, consider buying something else. I know we often want to spoil our children, but it shouldn’t be something that puts your whole family in debt.
Step 2: Create A Holiday Spending Budget.
Now that you have a solid list of what everyone wants or needs, create yourself a realistic and stress free holiday spending budget. The sooner you get your budget, the better so you can capitalize on sales like Black Friday or Cyber Monday! You can use SunTrust’s onUp Budget Worksheet to keep you on track and organized.
Step 3: Give Back For The Holidays!
While gift giving and receiving is awesome, one of the best gifts you can give is helping someone less fortunate. Some of my best holiday memories were when I was able to help at church, at a shelter or with a food drive. Even when things can be rough for us, there’s always somebody else who has it worse. It’s important for our youth to see that the holidays are about much more than getting presents. If we raise the youth to want to give back, we help them make a better future!
Hopefully our list will help you have that stress free holiday that you’ve been waiting for. If you need a few more tips for saving this holiday check out SunTrust’s onUp Holiday Planning Guide! When you’re less stressed about money, you’ll be able to enjoy this time with your family more.
