Should You Have Personal Responsibilities When Focused On Your Career?
We all feel that we need to chase the things we want in life but when we are faced with the prospect of getting older we may have to choose between personal responsibilities and a career. And if you are young enough you might believe that you can focus on your career but when you feel that there is stress at work or the pull of home comforts overwhelm you should you start to give up on your career, or should you even have personal responsibilities when you are focused on developing your career at this point? Where does the balance lie?
Something Will Have To Give
Whether it’s a child or a pet you have got to remember that you need to be emotionally invested. And yes, while there are plenty of doggy daycare centers, if you really want a pet it’s something that should be used sparingly; they aren’t a full-time babysitting service! When we look at other parents whose children are forever in daycare because they work all the hours under the sun, surely these parents have some sense of guilt or regret? And you’ve really got to ask yourself the question: are you able to be a good parent/responsible pet owner/dedicated partner if you are working a lot as well? Something will have to give.
Should You Give Yourself A Time Limit?
Some people feel that if they want to have a family they’ve got to make a sacrifice in terms of stopping their whole career. But is this really the case? You don’t need to completely stop your life but if you want to be a good parent it’s a good idea to completely give yourself over to these responsibilities for a few years while everything settles. It’s not just in terms of children being old enough to go to school full time, but even in terms of a relationship, if you are forever working and not giving time to the other person are they going to resent you further down the line? Or are they even going to stay with you? It’s these things that we’ve got to think about. But if we give ourselves a time limit to get back on track this can put a lot of pressure on us too.
Should You Have Personal Responsibilities When Focused On Your Career?
It’s all about that balance. If you are are looking to have a child, a pet, or a long term relationship, you’ve got to realize that the balance needs to be there. The big problem in terms of career trajectories is that the institutions demand you give yourself over wholeheartedly. But even if you do this for a few years will it get you to the point where you want to be? And it also begs the question: what happens when you hit the top? A lot of people can feel that the grass is always greener on the other side but is this really the case? If you feel the pull towards having a child or a long-term relationship should you feel that you have to sacrifice your career? No, but what if you are in a job where the powers that be aren’t so understanding? Perhaps it’s time to rethink your trajectory? Perhaps starting your own business using your experience can be the one true way to get that balance you need so you can have personal responsibilities in life but make the career that you want.
