4 Tips for Remodeling a Small and Cramped Bathroom When You Want to Expand
One of the most important rooms of a home is the bathroom. The bathroom, in fact, can make or break your ability to quickly sell a home for a reasonable price. Over the years, bathroom remodels will be required to preserve the value of your home. However, certain bathrooms are very small spaces, and that cramped space can prove challenging to expand during a remodel. Thankfully, there are strategies you can use to address this.
Remove Your Bulky Vanity
Something that may take up a lot of space in a bathroom is the vanity. To create more space, remove your bulky, old vanity and install a new one that is far more simplified. The medicine cabinet, for example, could be installed directly into the wall. A pedestal sink doesn’t have large cabinets underneath it, giving you more space.
Install a Transparent Shower Door
While shower curtains may have their use, they have some downsides. One of these downsides is that they can make a small bathroom feel even smaller than it actually is. If you can see inside the shower, the space may feel larger. Instead of using a shower curtain, consider installing a transparent shower door made out of glass, acrylic, or another material. This will make the space feel larger.
Knock Out Some Walls
Of course, one of the easiest ways to make a bathroom feel larger is the most obvious. You can knock out some walls and actually expand the space. Determine if this is physically possible by examining your home’s blue-print. Removing an unused closet in an adjoining room, for example, can give you plenty of space to work with.
Just keep in mind that you will likely need to redo the plumbing if you are moving sinks, toilets, or showers and tubs. You will likely need to contract plumbing services to install new plumbing connections if the walls with your faucets or shower heads are significantly altered.
Use a Pocket Door
A pocket door is one that slides and disappears into a wall unlike a traditional door that just opens up into a room. Installing such a door will require some added work and expense since the wall the door slides into will need to be altered. Still, this is one definite way to open up more of a bathroom so the space itself does not feel as confined when the door is open and more of the room can be used for storage and other purposes.
Just because your bathroom currently feels small and cramped does not mean it has to remain that way. The options listed above can do a lot to open up the space in your bathroom. You’ll be able to get more utility out of your bathroom and feel more comfortable using it as well.
