5 Do’s and Don’ts of Denture Care
For those who have issues with multiple teeth, dentures can be both an affordable and useful option. Before you plan to wear them on a regular basis, it’s important that you take your time to learn the dos and don’ts associated with them. Learning now will help to prevent any damage and hard-earned lessons when you get your new dentures.
Do Clean Them Daily
The first major do of denture care is to clean them every day. Most people will clean their dentures at night when they take them out to go to bed. Picking the same time each day can help to ensure that you keep a consistent cleaning schedule. You’ll want to make sure that you remove any food particles that are stuck in between your false teeth.
Do Take Them Out at Night
Unless your dentist prescribed otherwise for a specialized condition, you should be taking your dentures out every night. You’ll want to soak them in water as this helps to maintain their shape. You can kill two birds with one stone by soaking your dentures in a mild denture cleaning solution.
Don’t Use Toothpaste
It may seem like second nature to put some toothpaste on your dentures and give them a good scrubbing with your toothbrush. However, you should never do that with partial dentures or full dentures. Toothpaste has abrasive substances that can damage your dentures. Keep in mind that your dentures are not as strong as your regular teeth, and they must be treated with more care.
Don’t Wear Broken Dentures
If you’ve broken or chipped sections of your dentures, you need to get them repaired by a licensed professional. You should never just opt for wearing broken dentures as this can wreak havoc on your dental health. Additionally, a weakened denture can lead to more cracks and problems over time.
Do Remove Adhesive Residue
It’s not uncommon to have adhesive residue on your dentures or inside of your mouth. While you may think that leaving this on will help your denture to adhere better the next time that you wear them, that’s simply not the case. Rather, the old residue will hinder the new adhesive’s ability to bond your dentures to the inside of your mouth. Always take the time to remove excess adhesive residue to ensure a great bond during your next wear.
Dentures are fairly easy to care for and can give you back the confidence that you’ve been missing. By following our list of do’s and don’ts, you’ll be sure to have a long-lasting and healthy relationship with your dentures.
