Watch Your Spending

Whether you’re planning to sell the home immediately after the remodel or you still plan to live there for the foreseeable future, it’s good to keep value in mind when you renovate. Any renovations you do should increase the value of your home more than they cost you, otherwise they’re not worth the money. It’s generally recommended that you stick to renovations costing from 5 to 15 percent of your home’s value. If the renovations cost less than that, they’re unlikely to impact value much and could even have a negative effect. If they cost more, you’re unlikely to recoup the cost when selling the home.

Get a Remodeling Team

There are certainly benefits to handling a remodel on your own. You’re in complete control, and you don’t need to pay a contractor. But it will take up a ton of time, and you’ll need to have the skills required to do a good job. In most situations, you’re much better off hiring a remodeling team to do the job for you.

Rent a Dumpster

With all the materials that will be going in the trash during a remodel, you will likely find that your garbage bin isn’t nearly enough to handle this new load of garbage. Make it easy on yourself and your remodeling team by renting a dumpster from a company like Tri-State Disposal or someone similar while you renovate. It’s convenient and ensures that you don’t have any trash just lying around.

Stay Somewhere Else during the Remodel

It’s no fun staying in a house that’s going through renovations. Workers will be coming through all the time, it’s noisy and parts of the home may not be accessible. You could save yourself a headache by finding somewhere to stay for the remodel or at least a portion of it.

Home remodels can be major projects, but they can be well worth it when your home ends up much better than it was before. Just make sure you get the right team in place to keep the project on track.
