A man’s wardrobe says a lot about the type of person that they are, so it is vital to get it right. It doesn’t matter whether you dress casually or are suited and booted every day, having the right accessories can pull an outfit together. Here are eight accessories every man needs in their wardrobe.
A decent watch
A good watch is vital to finish an outfit – they are both practical and decorative. Ditch the tacky, velcro-strapped digital watch though and invest in a good quality, timeless analog piece, such as a used Rolex Daytona, which can be picked up very reasonably. These are an investment as they will last a lifetime and never go out of fashion.
Backpacks are practical and useful for a day out in the great outdoors, but when it comes to being a little smarter, a messenger bag is the height of sophistication AND practicality. They fit everything you need in for a day at work while being comfortable to use at the same time.
Not only do sunglasses look great and give you an air of sophistication, but they also protect your eyes from being damaged by the sun, so they are an essential accessory for every man. Try to stay away from ultra-trendy reflective ski style ones (unless, of course, you are going skiing!) and stick to traditional aviators or wayfarers, which suit every shape face. Don’t forget to make sure they comply with safety standards – cheap ones can sometimes damage your eyes more than not wearing them.
Every man needs a couple of good quality belts for every occasion. A black or brown leather one and a tan leather one are the absolute basics – make sure the buckles are simple and not too fussy or gaudy. The general rule of thumb is to match your belt to your shoes.
A scarf is not just a fashion accessory, but a practical one as well. Choose one made of wool or super-soft cashmere in muted tones for a sophisticated look or a plain, but bright one, to add a pop of color to an otherwise plain outfit. Team them with a pea-coat for the ultimate in snuggly sophistication.
Shoes are obviously an essential part of every outfit, so don’t be tempted to treat them as an afterthought. A man doesn’t need lots of cheap shoes, just a couple of pairs of good quality ones. A pair of black oxfords and brown brogues for more formal occasions, and a pair of deck shoes or sneakers for casual wear. Socks are also important – leave the novelty Christmas ones at home and stick to plain dark colors.
By making sure that you have these accessories in your wardrobe, you know that you will always look smart and well put together, even on the most casual of days. An accessory can make or break an outfit – don’t let it break yours.
