Outlander Season 2 is HERE! Enter To Win our #Outlander Fan Prize Pack Giveaway!

I’m so excited that Outlander has returned! It felt like forever, or I was too eager, lol.  If you can remember reading 5 Reasons Outlander Has Got Us Hooked! from last season, you’ll know why I LOVE this show!

Season 2 returns with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) embarking on new adventures in the New World, we get to see when they land in Boston and find out what will take them to Paris.  I loved the juxtaposition of Claire’s life with Jamie an showing how things were when she got back to Frank.  As someone who has read the books, I’m sure that part is a bit clearer for me… but I’ve always loved how Outlander has been able to convey the books messages as accurately as possible.  I look forward to seeing the costumes, scenic changes and intrigue come to life as this season progresses. There are so many parts to this second season; from Jamie making it back to Lallybroch, to Boston, to Paris… it’s sure to be a great adventure!

Since I know we have a lot of readers that are Outlander fans, we wanted to do another Outlander Fan Prize Pack Giveaway! Enter below.

  • I don’t have Starz but not long ago there was a free preview weekend and they ran all of the season one episodes to lead up to the season two premiere, so I was able to catch them. 🙂 My favorites are definitely Claire and Jamie. I rather like when Claire is using her medical experience to help someone. It’s killing me to not be able to watch season two while occasionally seeing spoiler-ish images on social media.

Jamie’s Awkward Naked Sister Moment from Ep102: CASTLE LEOCH – Yeah, this one sucks. Not only is poor Jamie being forced to look at his naked sister, but she’s in the arms of the one man who makes Angus look like the ideal brother-in-law.

  • Allyson Becker

    I adore Claire!

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite moments was when Jamie spanked Claire! Ha, ha!

Looks like I will be catching last night’s episode tonight. Love that show. I love having Starz on demand!!

  • Jennifer C.

When Claire tells Black Jack when he’s going to die.

  • Mai Tran

Moment from Ep106: THE GARRISON COMMANDER– Bravery aside, probably not a great idea to taunt the sadistic English dragoon holding a whip who’s about to flog you. Oh, Jamie . . . you did look mighty fine doing it though.

  • elena

I love the moment when Murthag tells Claire he was in love with Jamie’s mother and that he still loved her when she married another man…so sweet!

  • buttercup magoo

    I like I like alot

  • jo liddement

My favourite moment in the series was when Claire set herself up as a singer to help look for Jamie and she sang 1940’s songs to the 18th century people and they loved it!

  • Melinda Jana

when Claire and Jamie got married

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite moments was when Jamie saved Claire from Capt. Black Jack Randall. It was such a relief to see Jamie in that window!

  • Nicole Reel

One of my favorite moments was when Claire first went into the past. It was all so surreal.

  • Jeena Bittenbender

I was really scared when Clair got sick with stomach pains. I wonder who tried to poison her??

  • Mai Tran

1 of my favorites: Another realm of Jacks evil: We think Claire’s getting away with rescuing Jamie when it all takes a turn for the very sick and twisted worst.

  • buttercup magoo

when Claire and Jamie got married

  • Melinda Jana

    Claire is so awesome

  • Jennifer C.

I loved watching Claire and Jamie’s first kiss! 🙂

  • Jeena Bittenbender

I loved that game they played at the gathering. It was epic.

  • Nicole Reel

I really like Claire and Jamie. They are just too cute together.

  • rajee

    love Claire

  • Mai Tran

Seeing Jamie for the very first time in the cottage. I had been on the fence about Sam – but from the very first scene, I knew he was going to be perfect.

  • buttercup magoo

    love this show

  • Melinda Jana

    wedding scene

  • Jeena Bittenbender

I loved how nervous Claire was right after the wedding..

  • Jennifer C.

Jamie is one of my favourite characters! His life as a Scottish soldier and landowner is so fascinating to watch!

  • theponyhalf~

    I love Jamie

  • Nicole Reel

If i had to pick my favorite character, I would pick Jamie over Claire. He is so dreamy

  • Mai Tran

Angus and the chair: Okay, this is hands down one of the funniest moments and we can all agree with Angus’s logic right? Only you get to talk shit about your friends, the minute someone else does you’re reaching for a wooden object to restore the boundaries.

  • Joel Cameron

    Great!

  • Melinda Jana

    Jamie and Claire’s wedding

  • Jeena Bittenbender

    I loved how the met

  • Jennifer C.

One of my favourite characters is Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser. I love how loyal he is and how he always has Jamie’s back.

  • Mai Tran

In episode 1.5 (“Rent”… but not like the bohemian rock-musical), Claire is forced to travel the Mackenzie lands with Dougal and his band of only-sometimes-merry men as they collect rent from tenants. As the large party spends a night in a sketchy inn, Claire at least gets to sleep in her own room, but hears a strange noise outside… and she opens the door to find Jamie sleeping on the floor. He explains that he did not trust all the men carousing in the tavern below– and he felt he should sleep outside her door to protect her and prevent dangerous drunks from wandering into her room, looking for a little non-consensual action. Though Claire offered to let him sleep in her room, he respectfully refused, claiming he didn’t want to ruin her honor. Jamie, you are too perfect!

  • buttercup magoo

    love this show

  • Melinda Jana

    Murtagh

  • Nicole Reel

My favorite characters would have to be Claire and Jamie. I like Claire’s husband, but only sometimes.

  • Jeena Bittenbender

It’s going to be on tomorrow night so I will have a favorite scene in 2 days. Lol. I always find something new to love…

  • Jennifer C.

Another one of my favourite characters is Dougal MacKenzie. He is such a strong and fascinating character.

  • Mai Tran

When Claire is trying to tell the clansmen that she needs iodine, merthiolate, ALCOHOL! “They just look at her like she’s crazy, not to mention the foul language she uses, and their reaction to it – ‘I’ve never heard a woman use such language in my life.’” And when he gets up, this is the first time he calls her Sassenach.

  • Jeena Bittenbender

It’s on tonight!!! Can’t watch it on demand until tomorrow I think. But I bet I have a new favorite scene….

  • buttercup magoo

    am in love

  • Mai Tran

Jamie’s Awkward U-Turn Sex Moment from Ep107: THE WEDDING – This may not be your favorite, but I love the subtly of this moment on the faces of both Jamie and Claire when she takes charge of their lovemaking after his brazen declaration of:

  • Jeena Bittenbender

I have a favorite scene in every episode. It changes weekly while the show is on. But I do love brutal game the played at the gathering. That was epic.

  • Jennifer C.

One of my favourite characters is Geillis Duncan. She is such a compelling character. I love how she and Claire share an interest in herbs and healing, yet there is something more mysterious about Geillis.

  • Mai Tran

Wentworth Prison (episode 1.15), in scenes too awful to even gif about. It will be interesting to watch how Jamie gradually heals (or doesn’t) as the Frasers navigate French society.

  • buttercup magoo

    am in love with jamie

  • Sandra Vaughan

lol, I love any scene that involves Claire cursing at the clan-Jesus H Christ. I absolutely love Murtaugh and Jamie. My favorite moment from both the books and the show is when Claire tells Jamie the truth about where she’s from and then chooses to stay in the past with Jamie and tells him to take her home to Lallybroch.

  • Melinda Jana

    Jamie of course

  • Mai Tran

Though Claire’s covet-worthy, comfy, chunky knits are the stuff that dreams are made on (and let’s not even talk about Jamie’s kilts), her wedding dress (1.7, “The Wedding”) was simply stunning. If falling through time means you get to wear dresses like this, sign me up.

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite characters is Jamie’s older sister, Janet Fraser Murray (Jenny). She is just as stubborn as Jamie and quite entertaining.

  • Melinda Jana

    when Claire meets the family

  • Mai Tran

When Claire, a former World War II combat nurse, is transported to 18th century Scotland, her newfound companions discover her talents as a healer. They bring her along just in case anyone needs mending on a rent-collecting trip throughout the Mackenzie lands on behalf of the laird (Gary Lewis). But just like in the 21st century, paying the man proves to be a bit (ahem) taxing. While this is the episode where we see Claire bond with Scottish women over dyeing kilts, and learn of Dougal’s (Graham McTavish) political aspirations using Jamie’s back as a teaching lesson—and there’s a sweet moment between Claire and Jamie (aka “Claime”?), when he sleeps outside her door to protect her from drunkards at the inn—the trip just goes on for far too long.

  • buttercup magoo

    Jamie of course

  • Melinda Jana

    Janet

  • Jeena Bittenbender

Wow!!! Jamie is furious with Claire!!! Can’t say I blame him, or her. I bet it about killed her to ask him for that year. This is going to be a hard thing for them to work through.

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite moments: Watching Jamie duel! 🙂

  • Nicole Reel

I love watching Jamie and Claire’s romance. So romantic.

  • Mai Tran

The episode, which was written by a woman (Anne Kenney) and directed by a woman (Anna Foerster), was all about watching Jamie. Foerster added choreography not in the script, where Claire tells Jamie to take off his shirt because she wants to look at him and walks around his muscular form as he undresses, a moment fans loved. Jamie’s expressions were priceless — delight, confusion, wonder, delirium — as the much-passed-around GIFs of his orgasm face attest.

  • buttercup magoo

    I like

  • Jennifer C.

A sweet moment was when Jamie received the wooden snake toy that his older brother, Willie, carved for him.

  • Mai Tran

“The Search” (Episode 14): Jamie’s not in this episode, which almost automatically sent it to the bottom of the list. After the young Scot’s been captured, and then escapes the Red Coats after an ill-fated turn with The Watch militia, his sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and Claire set out on a badass girls’ trip to find him. Jenny’s just given birth, too, proving to be just as tough as her brother. But things take a weird turn when Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) tracks them down and takes over for Jenny. Claire and Murtagh become traveling minstrels, singing and dancing their way through Scotland, hoping that Jamie comes to them and their “Sassenach” act. Like “Rent,” the song-and-dance routine—though Balfe does have a nice lilt in her voice—gets tedious after awhile. And did we mention that Jamie’s not in this episode?

  • buttercup magoo

    So romantic.

  • Melinda Jana

    Jamie, no doubt

  • Sany

    Great!

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite moments was when Jamie said (to Claire): “Now if you won’t walk, I shall pick you up and throw you over my shoulder. Do you want me to do that?” 🙂

  • rajee

    Jamie is my fav

  • buttercup magoo

    Jamie he’s a dream boat

  • Annie Ellis

    jamie

  • Jennifer C.

Another of my favourite moments was during the episode called “The Gathering.” Claire tries to escape (back to the standing stones of Craigh na Dun), but then she trips over Jamie in the stables. 🙂

  • Mai Tran

“The Watch” (Episode 13): While Jenny and her husband Ian (Steven Cree) have been taking care of the Lallybroch, they’ve been paying Mafia-eque protection money to The Watch. Since Jamie still has a price on his head, he can’t trust The Watch, and there’s an uneasy detente at Lallybroch while Watchmen stay at the house. The traitor Horrocks comes back into the picture, setting up Jamie’s plight for the rest of the season. While there was a little suspense at the end with the Red Coat ambush, this episode proved a little too heavy-handed without much subtlety. Who didn’t think it was going to be a girl for Jenny and Ian? (I’ve never read the books.) The characters were all too sure it was going to be a boy. And Claire’s weepy confession to Jamie that she might be barren seemed a little too melodramatic.

  • buttercup magoo

    Jamie

  • Nicole Reel

I love Jamie and Claire and how much they care for each other. Such a cute couple.

  • Jennifer C.

In the episode “Both Sides Now,” I love how Claire said: “In that moment, the reason for my bitterness became clear to me. I wasn’t angry at Jamie or the Redcoat deserters. I was angry at myself for forgetting about my plan to make my way back to the stones at Craigh na Dun, my plan to return to my own time, to my husband, Frank.” To me, this is the moment when she realizes that she has a role to play in the past (in Jamie’s life and time).

  • rajee

    Jamie and Claire

  • Mai Tran

“By the Pricking of My Thumbs” (Episode 10): So much happens in this episode, but it all feels disjointed and a bit rushed. It starts off with hot sexy time between the newlyweds, as Jamie does his best to please his mo nighean donn. But then the show drops the bomb that Geillis (Lotte Verbeek), whom Claire finds pagan dancing half-naked at night in the woods, is carrying Dougal MacKenzie’s love child. By the end of the episode, both Gellis’ and Dougal’s spouses are conveniently dead, and Claire’s accused of witchcraft along with Gellis. In between, Claire encounters a changeling baby in the woods and blackmails the Duke of Sandringham for Jamie’s exoneration. For his part, Jamie agrees to be the Duke’s second in a duel, in which he’s only mildly hurt. There’s simply too much plot to absorb in one 60-minute sitting.

  • buttercup magoo

    love all episode

  • Megan likes contests

I do like Jamie, even if he isn’t the brightest bulb. He’s like a puppy.

  • Lauren Peterson

I’d have to go with Claire.

  • Mai Tran

“Lallybroch” (Episode 12): Jamie makes a triumphant return to his home, Lallybroch, and turns into a jerk in the process. First off, he accuses his sister Jenny of having Black Jack Randall’s (Tobias Menzies) love child through a purported sexual assault; he realizes his mistake when his sister finally gets to tell her side of the story. As the new laird of Lallybroch, he shows off by becoming the benevolent patron for the Lallybroch tenants, giving them a pass when they can’t afford to pay. Good old Jenny—a force to be reckoned with—reminds him that the estate needs the money since they themselves don’t have a lot of it. The episode had a lot of momentous revelations—including Menzies’ willingness to bare all—as we learn that Black Jack can’t perform (sexually) with the ladies. In another flashback to Ft. William, Black Jack makes Jamie an offer. He will suspend additional flogging if Jamie gives his body freely to him. The Scot opts for more lashing, foreshadowing the finale. This episode is also pivotal as Claire and Jamie declare their love for each other for the first time, with the audience surely uttering a collective “awww” during the scene.

  • buttercup magoo

    jamie

  • Melinda Jana

  • Jennifer C.

In Season 2, I LOVED Jamie’s reaction to Claire’s red dress!

  • Lauren Peterson

    I gotta go with Claire.

  • Annie Ellis

    Murtagh

  • Mai Tran

“The Way Out” (Episode 3): While there are a few cute “Claime” scenes in “The Way Out,” the episode focuses on Claire’s strong-willed personality as she pits science against religion and brings a sense of 20th century justice to the 18th century. Housekeeper Mrs. Fitz’s nephew has been possessed by the devil, and Claire suspects it’s something else. She diagnoses poisoning, but the boy’s mother and Mrs. Fitz would at first rather trust the boy’s health and soul to the local priest, who looks like the devil incarnate himself. Claire’s equally as outraged when she finds out a young boy will probably lose his hand for stealing food. She appeals to Gellis, whose husband is the magistrate, to help spare the boy. She also asks for Jamie’s help in freeing the boy from the pillory—and then getting to the bottom of the poisoning for Mrs. Fitz’s nephew. This time, Claire saves the boy, much to the chagrin of the priest. Claire is a thoroughly modern Millie in this episode, but for someone who’s trying to fit in, she doesn’t do a great job in keeping a low profile.

“The Gathering” (Episode 4): The action ratchets up a notch in this episode as Claire plans a daring escape from Castle Leoch during the oath-taking ceremony by the men of the clan, who all need to pledge their allegiance to the laird. During her escape attempt, she’s accosted and kissed by Dougal (the first of several attempts through the season) and she responds by clocking him in the head with a stool. Claire runs into Jamie who convinces her that escape would be futile since the laird has extra guards on duty. Her escape plan ends on an anticlimactic note, which is a bit of a bummer. As the guards find the pair, they’re escorted back to the oath taking, which Jamie has been avoiding. We’re introduced to a heavy dose of clan politics and intrigue as Jamie’s forced to choose allegiance, which could end in his death either way. He finds a middle ground that satisfies both Colum and Dougal, and saves his own life. The gruesome boar-hunting scenes at the end seem tacked on, only there to show Claire’s a tough combat nurse, and that Dougal isn’t such a bad guy after all. (He’s anguished, after all, when his friend dies during the boar hunt.)

“Castle Leoch” (Episode 2): This episode hints at the blossoming relationship between Jamie and Claire as they begin to share (some of) their stories with each other. It’s the first time we see Jamie’s shirtless back, scarred by two floggings in a week at the hands of Black Jack Randall. He’s wanted for a murder that he didn’t do, and for some reason, Claire believes him. Jamie’s dreamboat heroism is further solidified in the episode when he takes another striping for a young girl Laoghaire (Nell Hudson). The episode has a few lighthearted moments in which Claire is fitted with a proper 18th century wardrobe, but it also feels like a staging episode, introducing characters and setting Claire up for her “imprisonment” by the MacKenzies at the Castle.

“Sassenach” (Episode 1): In the pilot episode, we’re introduced to Claire—an intelligent, headstrong woman who likes her whisky and wine, and isn’t afraid of her own sexuality and desires. A wartime nurse, she doesn’t scare easily, which comes in handy when she’s transported back from 1945 to 1743 Scotland in the midst of a skirmish between the British Red Coats and the Scottish Highlanders. In “Sassenach” (which means “outsider”), the major characters are introduced, including her modern husband Frank (also played by Menzies) and her Scottish husband Jamie. The chemistry between Balfe and Heughan is electrifying from the outset, and there are lines of dialogue and visual cues that portend future episodes, setting up the rest of the season beautifully.

“The Reckoning” (Episode 9): This episode marked the mid-season return of Outlander with a whole lot of action and a steamy bedroom sequence ending that you might not want to watch with mom or dad in the room. It opens with Jamie rescuing Claire from the grasp of Black Jack Randall, and then demanding an apology from her for not obeying his orders. There’s an intense fight between the two, but Claire thinks it’s over when Jamie tells her—hearing her scream at Randall’s hands was “tearing my guts out, Claire!” The episode also showed a notable clash of cultures between the 20th and 18th century mores, with Claire getting spanked (beaten) for not following her husband. She gets the last word on that, however, when in a shockingly awesome sequence, she straddles her husband, and—mid-thrusting—pulls a dagger to his neck and says, “Listen to me. If you ever raise a hand to me again, James Fraser, I will cut your heart out and have it for breakfast, you understand me?” (The episode does get some points off because of Jamie’s struggle with Laoghaire’s seduction; he entertains the girl’s heaving bosoms for a little too long, which was almost out of character for him.)

“Both Sides Now” (Episode 8): This episode examines Frank’s struggles with his wife’s disappearance. He’s a broken man who refuses to believe that his wife would leave him for another man. He also refuses to believe the time traveling lore at the rocks at Craigh na Dun—or does he? There’s a nicely edited scene in which Claire runs for the rocks simultaneously as Frank returns to the same place. She’s captured by the Red Coats and taken to Black Jack Randall before she can get back to 1945. Balfe positively shines in this episode. She’s trained by her Scottish Highlanders to protect herself, and she uses the newfound knowledge to dispense of a Red Coat traitor who attempts to rape her. Balfe’s reaction after the killing is realistic as she goes into shock. Later in the episode, Claire relies on her intelligence and wit to try and outsmart Randall, going head-to-head with Menzies in a tension-filled scene about the Duke of Sandringham. She’s an admirable, three-dimensional character, whose flaws make her all the more endearing.

“The Garrison Commander” (Episode 6): This episode is a highlight reel for Menzies. Claire’s modern-day, loving husband Frank is a marked contrast to his ancestor Black Jack Randall. The scenes between Claire and Black Jack as they talk about honesty over a shared drink are turned 180 degrees when Randall begins telling Claire the story of how he inflicted lashes on a young boy (Jamie) for his crimes. The flashback is brutal to watch, but Randall’s glee at the recollection is just as sickening. When Claire tries to find some hope for her (first) husband’s ancestor, we actually feel a little pity for him. That is, until he punches her in the gut and orders his lieutenant to kick the woman when she’s down. It’s intense and maniacal, and Menzies plays it oh so well.

“The Devil’s Mark” (Episode 11): Like in “By the Pricking of My Thumbs,” so much happens in this episode, but in this case, the critical moments fit together well. Geillis and Claire are put on trial for witchcraft, and while Jamie’s rescue of Claire isn’t much of a surprise, the big, jaw-dropping reveal comes from Geillis whispering “1968” to Claire before they part ways. Claire isn’t alone in her time travels! While we’re still dumbstruck (those of us who haven’t read the books anyway), Claire confesses everything to Jamie—and while he admits he doesn’t understand it all, he believes her. It’s a sweet moment between the two lovers: The utter relief on Claire’s face and Jamie’s absolute faith in his wife. The episode furthers the already emotional ride with Jamie taking her “home.” Instead of Lallybroch, he takes her to Craigh na Dun, so she can return to her own time and her first husband. Jamie’s heartbreak is nearly audible. But in the end, Claire makes her choice between worlds and men: It’s Jamie. (Good choice, Claire!)

“Wentworth Prison” (Episode 15): This episode is harrowing and painful—not only because of the physical torture, but because of the psychological torture involved as well. Claire sneaks into the prison to rescue Jamie, somehow. She’s caught by Black Jack Randall, and Jamie bargains with the devil to let her go. Randall wants assurance that Jamie will give himself freely once she’s gone, so Black Jack hammers his already mangled hand onto a table while Claire clutches Jamie’s chest and begs Randall to stop. It’s sick, but just when you think it’s over, Randall forces Jamie to kiss him in front of Claire. Undeterred, Claire kisses Jamie as Black Jack drags her out of the cell. She gets a final word with Randall as she says the rumors about her being a witch are true. She tells him she knows the exact moment that he’ll die, and whispers it in his ear. The three actors bring their A-game to these scenes, embodying their characters so fully that the audience can’t help but feel the same pain and hatred. Lesser actors could have easily chewed the scenery in the prison episode, but this trio played them—and off each other—with as much restraint as possible. It’s a gripping, mind-fuck of an episode and worth the watch.

“The Wedding” (Episode 7): By now, you’ve probably heard about the intense sex scenes in this episode of Outlander, and while they are hot and titillating—they’re usually not totally gratuitous. The episode smartly retells Jamie and Claire’s wedding day through flashback, revealing the events that led to an arranged marriage between these two strangers. While smitten Jamie was off getting a good kilt, having a ring made and finding a gown for his bride, Claire was getting drunk. And why shouldn’t she? She’s already married, not in her own century, and is being forced to marry a guy (albeit a great-looking Scot) that she barely knows. The nerves between the newlyweds are palpable. There’s a lot of whisky downed throughout the night (love that the girl can hold her liquor!). When Claire puts off Jamie’s kiss to ask him to tell her the Fraser family history, it’s laughable, and totally understandable. She only knew his real name the moments before the ceremony. They spend hours talking and genuinely getting to know one another before doing the deed. And when they do—the first time—it’s awkward. Claire realizes that she’s now a bigamist, adulteress, but enjoys it. And they spend more time that night learning about each other, as Claire commits to her new life. She even teaches her bridegroom a thing or two in the bedroom, and it’s definitely sexy. (You just have to buy into the fact that Jamie is as inexperienced and naive as he is supposed to be, and things will be fine.) The episode doesn’t end in a post-coital glow however, as Claire’s bittersweetly reminded of her other life, when her old wedding ring drops to the floor.

“To Ransom a Man’s Soul” (Episode 16): Can we hand Sam Heughan an Emmy nomination right now? And, since we’re in a giving mood, we might as well dole some out to Menzies and Balfe, too. “To Ransom a Man’s Soul” is one of the most riveting and powerful hours of television we’ve seen in awhile. It focuses on a taboo subject—male rape—and the after effects of trauma on a victim. The scenes between Black Jack and Jamie are sadistic and difficult to watch. The two actors bare all, especially Menzies, and while the torture is horrific—and this sounds like an oxymoron—the scenes are as as tastefully done as could be. The pleasure that Menzies’ Randall experiences while asserting control over Jamie, physically and emotionally, is counteracted by Heughan’s lifeless, empty countenance as his Jamie wishes Black Jack would just kill him. Randall caresses Jamie in a twisted Pieta-like pose and playfully bops him on the nose with a finger, chastising him for not kissing him back. “I know you can do better,” says Randall. It sends a collective chill through the audience. Even after rescue, Jamie loses his will to live. He feels guilty for letting himself release with Randall, and asks for Claire’s forgiveness. She rightly tells him—assures him—that there’s nothing to forgive. But if he wants to die, she might as well, too. His anguish is her anguish, and the episode solidifies them as one of the most endearing couples to grace the small screen.

The show has gone to dark places, usually thanks to its sneering villain Captain Jack Randall who not only brutally flayed Jamie earlier in the season, but also delivered a series of nasty kicks to Claire when she was already prostrate on the floor. The music, here, goes a long way toward distinguishing that kind of violence from this. Moore went so far as to consult several women who work on the show to find the perfect moment for the music to kick in. “If you brought it in early, it took the teeth out of the scene. It took the tension out,” Moore told Vulture. “And if you brought it in too late, it started to get uncomfortable.”

“The Wedding” is one of the most beautifully depicted episodes in the entire series. Ron D. Moore took a very creative approach in how he told this story as a flashback of sorts rather than a linear structure and it really worked. Claire has had a lot of empowering moments: she saves lives, takes names, and doesn’t let small-minded people hold her back. But I’d argue that Claire’s most badass moment was also in the episode “The Reckoning.” Following the sparring match between newlyweds, Jamie punishes his wife for disobeying his orders– so, he hits Claire with his belt. After days of rejecting Jamie and doling out her own form of punishment, Claire makes it clear that 18th-century domestic violence simply isn’t acceptable: while in a– erm– passionate embrace, she brings a sword to Jamie’s throat and vows to cut out his heart and eat it for breakfast if he ever dares to hit her again. Brava, queen.

This show is chock-full of great fight scenes. But the most powerful of them was fought with words and death stares, not swords and guns. In episode 1.9 (“The Reckoning”), Jamie (Sam Heughan) rescues Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from the clutches of Captain “Black Jack” Randall (Tobias Menzies) in the nick of time. When they reach safety, Jamie yells at her for disobeying his orders to stay put, and Claire counters that he has no authority over her anyway.
