6 Style Tips For Dressing For Drizzly Weather

When I woke up this morning and saw the frizzy mess that is normally my hair, I knew that there was rain on the way. And judging by just how much frizz I had to tame, it’s going to be quite a storm! So, I opened my closet doors wide, sat down on the bed and started considering which of the items were suitable for a rainy day outfit. And thanks to the fact that I spent years living in a town where rain fell in both summer and winter, I had quite a lot of experience to draw on!

Keep dry

The first thing I pulled out of the closet was my trusty rain coat. It’s a plain black, mid-calf length, belted and hooded trench coat that I found in a thrift store years ago but thanks to careful cleaning and simple maintenance it looks as good as it did on the rack. A trench coat is probably one of the most versatile outer wear items you could own. If you don’t already have one then I’d suggest browsing through the wide selection of those you can find at affordable prices, which is possible with Neiman Marcus coupon codes.

Dress for your figure

With any coat, you have to be sure that it flatters your figure. I’m fortunate (unfortunate?) to be a smaller busted, slightly hippy woman so I can pull off a double breasted coat with a belt that highlights my curves. If you have a larger bust then avoid the double breasted variations, and if you don’t want to draw attention to your waist or curves look for a coat with asymmetrical or straight lines and no belt. Again, the choices are endless, but you have to try on a few before you’ll find the one that suits you perfectly!

Avoid the bulk

Many rain coats and trench coats are fairly bulky, so wear thin clothes underneath it. Something like a cashmere sweater or a thin cotton weave long sleeved blouse is perfect. If you’re planning on wearing bottoms then opt for something that isn’t to chunky as a lump under your coat will ruin any outfit, no matter how gorgeous the combination. I always try to have some kind of lining between my skin and whatever waterproof item I’m wearing, as even the most secure coat tends to ‘seep’ a little. The lining will keep any excess moisture away from your skin and provide that little bit of extra warmth that can come in quite handy if it’s cold and windy.

Gray weather = Bright colors

When the weather is cold, wet and miserable, the best way to cheer yourself up is by adding bright colors to your outfit! If you’re brave enough to pull it off, then go for a bright coat. Otherwise, you can liven things up with a fun umbrella, a jewel colored sweater, or even a funky pair of rain boots. I have what my daughter calls ‘Gypsy hair’ and as I mentioned, the slightest humidity turns it into a frizz bomb so I like to wear a brightly colored light tasseled scarf that matches my top as a kind of headband. The ‘band’ over my head hides the majority of my frizz and the tassels peaking through my curls add a little flirtatious fun. Sometimes I even braid the ends of the scarf into my hair!

An umbrella is an accessory

You probably learned that an umbrella is a tool intended solely to offer protection from the rain. Again, thank goodness for fashion designers who don’t obey any trends, because umbrellas are actually a very important accessory! Opt for a sleek look with a rich burgundy or deep emerald green umbrella, or make a statement with a bright yellow or brilliant blue umbrella. And if you’re really brave or just headed to lunch with friends then grab one of the children’s silly cartoon patterned umbrellas. If it happens to match your rain boots, the better!

Keep your toes dry

There is nothing more unpleasant than wet feet trapped inside a pair of wet shoes. If you’ve ever had to experience it then you know exactly what I mean! Thank goodness the fashion gods caught a wake up and decided to create fashionably patterned rain boots because now you’re not forced to wear a pair of shoes and just hope they’ll keep your feet more or less dry! There are loads of fun, frivolous, sexy, cute and just plain simple rain boot patterns to choose from so feel free to go crazy. If you’re looking for a slightly more sophisticated look then search for leather boots with a waterproof coating such as motorcycle boots or even waterproof riding boots.

And there you have it; your rainy day outfit is prepared. If you live in a climate where the rains are warm and often followed by heat then wear shorts or skirts, and if rain means cold, chilly days then leggings and skinny jeans tucked into your boots are the best way to stay warm. But whatever the weather, remember to dress your best and keep it stylish!
