Jackson Hole has a long and proud tradition as part of America’s Old West, so it should come as no surprise that the town regularly celebrates its traditions with a plethora of annual events. From cowboys to art fairs, the traditions on offer in Jackson Hole are as diverse as they are entertaining. Below you will find a handful of just some of this Wyoming town’s most popular traditions.

ElkFest

Held in May, this weekend-long event is centered around the Jackson Hole Boy Scout Antler Auction. The Boy Scouts help harvest the antlers, which are shed by elk each spring, and then auction them off, with a portion of the proceeds raised going towards maintaining the National Elk Refuge. The antlers that are harvested are used for a variety of purposes, including furniture, art, jewelry, and food.

Wyoming is almost synonymous with cowboys and Old West Days is the perfect way to celebrate the state’s pioneering tradition. Also held in May, this festival features western music, chuckwagon dinners, a horse-drawn parade, stage coach rides, and, of course, a rodeo. Of course, no Old West town would be complete without an old fashioned shootout and Jackson Hole’s shootout just so happens to be the longest-running one in the United States. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day at 6:00 pm everyday (except Sunday) crowds gather at the Town Square to witness one of Jackson Hole’s proudest traditions. Since 1957 the Shootout Gang has been entertaining visitors and residents alike with a display that perfectly sums up Wyoming’s pioneering spirit.

Fall Arts Festival

The main event on Jackson Hole’s cultural calendar is the Fall Arts Festival, which occurs in September of each year. The festival is one of the premier art events in the Rocky Mountains and is a great chance for visitors to enjoy some of the local talent, along with some excellent food, wine, and music.
