4 Reasons a Relationship with a Narcissist Will Never Work

If you’re in a relationship with a narcissist, you know just how confusing and frustrating life with them can be. Narcissists are toxic partners, and with their manipulation tactics, it can be hard to see the reality that they’ll never change. You often hold out hope that they’ll get better or return to who they were during the love-bombing phase of the relationship. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.
We’re here to give you 4 reasons a relationship with a narcissist will never work. While it’s hard to hear, it’s absolutely necessary for you to acknowledge it so you can move on and find the healthy and happy relationship you deserve. Take a break from scheduling your move with Black Tie Moving, and let’s get right into it.
They’ll Never Empathize with You
Narcissists aren’t capable of experiencing empathy which is one of the main reasons that they can never sustain a healthy and loving relationship. Empathy is the ability to feel the emotions of another person and without it, people will never be able to relate to someone else. This is where narcissists fall short, as they may feign empathy to get what they want, but they’ll never truly be able to see how their actions impact someone else. Without empathy, a relationship will never be able to flourish and develop as it requires respect and understanding from both partners.
They’ll Never Take Accountability
Narcissists are notorious for blame-shifting when it comes to arguments, disagreements, setbacks, or issues. They’re incapable of accepting accountability for anything that they perceive to be negative. Instead, they’ll blame you or others for anything that goes wrong in their life or excuse their own toxic behavior. Because of this distorted perception, the narcissist will never be able to grow or work on their negative behavior as they live with blinders on to avoid taking accountability.
They’ll Never Be Capable of Unconditional Love
Unconditional love is a foreign concept to narcissists, as they sincerely believe that love has conditions. They’ll only treat you with respect or “love” if you’re living in accordance with what they want. This is why narcissists are typically so controlling. They don’t value their partner’s wishes or desires. Instead, they expect their partner to conform to whatever it is that makes the narcissist comfortable. If the partner doesn’t follow suit, then expect the narcissist to retaliate and withhold affection or love until they get what they want.
They’ll Never Change
The most difficult part for people to accept when it comes to being in a relationship with a narcissist is that they’ll never change. It’s so easy to make excuses for them and to hold out hope, but the narcissist has no real intention of changing themselves because they believe there’s nothing wrong with them. While they may tell you they’ll change, this is usually only after an argument, and they only say this as another form of manipulation. If you’re in a relationship with a narcissist, you know that their actions hardly ever match their words.
